Nutraceutical products

The II level Master in “Nutraceutical Products: Design, Formulation Development, Control and Marketing” has the aim to provide a highly qualified degree post-graduate training in the field of Nutraceutical products.
The term “nutraceutical” is a synthesis of the two words: “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical” and was coined in 1989 by Stephen De Felice, American biochemist and nutritionist, member of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine (New Jersey, USA), who with this definition would indicate the discipline that studies food components with nutritional or physiological effect which play an important role in maintaining a healthy life and in the prevention of chronic diseases.
The term nutraceutic identifies specific components of food (vegetable or animal), plants or microorganisms, which, according to their functional properties, are on the borderline between food and medicine and can be used alone or mixture in the production of food supplements.
The increased awareness among consumers about the possibility of reducing degenerative diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes type II) with diet and food supplements has led to the increase of the consumption of nutraceuticals, whose market has been substantially increased, despite the economic crisis.
The continued positive trend shown by the market for food supplements over the past decades has led the pharmaceutical industry, as part of strategies to diversify production, in entering the field of Nutraceuticals, once the prerogative of the food industry alone.
Therefore, both the pharmaceutical industry and the food industry show the need to have professionals, who are already well qualified and can acquire specific skills in the field of Nutraceutical products.
The Master has the purpose:
1. to produce qualified professionals in the design, formulation development, production and analytical and microbiological control of nutraceuticals, able to operate in the pharmaceutical and food companies and
2. to provide the skills necessary for the marketing, adequate scientific information to health professionals, and fair presentation of these products to the public through the channels pharmacy, drug shop, herbal medicine shop.
